Hot off the press....the 2013 programme.

With 13 days to go and counting the 2013 programme is hot off the press.
What will YOU chose to see and do??

Natalie Lake

This young and talented folk musician sure has a bright future ahead of her! At only 19, she's performed in the Cambridge Folk Festival and Latitude Festival, not to mention a heap of gigs around the Norwich area. At such a young age, she's furrowing a grand future for herself.

Her music is acoustic folk. On occasions it's soothing and melodic, and others it's the kind where you just can't stop your feet from dancing. It's reminiscent of 'Of Monsters and Men', 'Daughter', and 'Colbie Calliat'. She also has some great covers of songs by 'Florence and the Machine' amongst others.

Buying her first guitar at 13, Natalie has since gone on to buy electric, a ukulele and wants to get a banjo! She plays with the different instruments to get different feels for songs.

A hit not to miss at Magdalen St. Celebrations!

Natalie Lake will be performing at The Acoustic Stage

Puppet Magic

Norwich Puppet Theatre is a unique treasure in Norfolk. Situated in one of the beautiful medieval buildings in the centre of Norwich city, this amazing little theatre is dedicated and proud to create, present and support puppetry on an International scale. They have had performances from countries such as Hungary and Slovenia! They also produce their own performances and go on tour!

The Puppet Theatre isn't just for kids, but for adults as well. Of course they have fun, magical shows which are most enjoyable to watch (especially if you're a big kid) such as Fireside Tales with Granddad and the Princess and the Pea (their upcoming shows).

They also have masterclasses led by industry professionals for people seeking development opportunities. They have a vast range of activities with workshops, puppet making, mask making, acoustics, films, visual poetry workshops amongst many others which are carried out throughout the year.

Make sure to check out what these guys can create at Magdalen St. Celebrations!!

Click here to see what they're all about!

Norwich Puppet Theatre will be hosting puppet making workshops for kids during the festival at St. Augustine's Hall from 10-5.

Bikes and Bagels and Cakes and Coffee, Oh My!

The Dandy Horse takes a whole new spin on the coffee experience. Not just for cycling enthusiasts, this relatively new cafe was opened in March this year by a couple who share a common love for cycling, coffee and great food!

The place itself has a workshop where a guy by the name of Spokes will fix your bike while you sip over T-Rex's, Spokes' partner, cup of home brew coffee or choose from a selection of freshly home made bagels, soups and cakes. Alternatively go upstairs where there is a large cinema screening room and couches with board games and books. The walls are decorated with cycling influenced arworks from local artists. The cafe also sells cycling influenced jewelry- necklaces and earrings made out of old bike chains. The couple are truly head over wheels about cycling!!

As a former event organiser, T-Rex has combined this work with her love of cycling. The Dandy Horse is host to a range of events from social rides, acoustic nights, rolla racing competitions and many other interesting activities.

The workshop is run by Spokes, who has over ten years experience in building and fixing bikes. He has worked in the cycling industry, fixed bikes in his garage, ran events at Dr.Bike and worked as an African partner liaison at Re-Cycle. I don't think there's a repair he couldn't fix!

So whether you're a cycling enthusiast, a coffee addict, a foodie or just keen to chill out on a sofa, make sure you say hey to this delightful duo (and the cute Nia, the cafe dog) during the festival!

Check them out here

The Dandy Horse will be open from 10-5 on the day of the Festival offering bages, bike maintenance, films and even a bike raffle! 27 Magdalen St. Norwich.

Jake Morrell

Who is Jake Morrell? Well, he’s the lead singer of a band of his name whose music so touching and catchy, you’ll be glad you caught them at Magdalen St. Celebrations. The band of four touches on a range of subjects from love and break ups to the past, memories and stories.

Their music has a country/folk feel with hints of English pop such as Keane, Mumford and Sons and Noah and the Whale. The group of talented musicians tend to draw on life experiences. In some cases, the songs are beautifully uplifting and joyful; while the ballads are heartrending and passionate. For such a new band, it is impressive how sentimental these four guys are!

This new band has certainly achieved a lot in a short space of time. This year they had a successful time performing in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where they had a great experience in front of large crowds. They sold over 200 CDs and had a whole tone of fun! They’ve performed in bars across the country, released new videos, been on BBC Radio with Steven Bumfrey, were the support band for “Brand New Heavies’, amongst many other great accomplishments. You can't help but think where they're going next?!

Make sure to catch this lively band at Magdalen St. Celebrations!

Jake Morrell will be performing at the King of Hearts acoustic stage. To find out more about Jake Morrell, visit the website here

Andy Kirkham Brings the Rhythms of the World to Norwich

Listening to the melodic strumming of local Norwich musician, Andy Kirkham, you could place yourself in the African hills gazing over the desert, or dancing in a hut with gypsies in the middle of a Latvian forest, on the beach in Barcelona, in a jazz club in New York or even in the Caribbean. He transports his audience to another time and another place through merely the sound of his fingers plucking at strings on guitar. And what a powerful guitar it is! His music has a sense of liveliness as he switches tones and rhythms. He fuses worldly music with classicality and experiments with style and genre.

His rich texture and eclectic variety of sound has captivated audiences for over 15 years. He plays at regular gigs and festivals either as a solo act or in collaboration with other artists such as in the
Eastern Straynotes (who play 30s jazz swing), Moxy Gerban (eastern European influenced band) and Jesse Barrett. Atop of all of this, he has found himself joyfully dedicated to writing music and arranging tunes whilst being a teacher.

His latest works and performances are heavily dominated by his intrigue with African music. He gathers inspiration from artists such as Ali Farka-Toure from Mali, Lyab Ogada from Kenya, amongst others. So expect to hear him singing in the songs’ influenced languages!

Andy’s work takes you on an adventure from the daily life on the cobbled streets of Norwich to anywhere you’d rather be by creating an atmosphere that is not only lively but harmonious. An absolute must see act!!

To find out more about Andy's music click here.

Andy Kirkham will be playing as part of the Magdalen Augustine Celebration on 19th October at The Blueberry (20 Cowgate Norwich) from 1-1.45pm

Moving along with the late summer Drift

Hello Everyone.  This is another friendly-neighbour blog-cast announcement!  From the buildup and anticipation of this year's Magdalen-Augustine Streets Celebration (info point: Oct. 19th), we realise that we need the help of all sorts of volunteers.  However, in particular, we need volunteers with interests in the work of heritage projects. Whether it be with historical accounts, research and its presentations, or, maybe with oral history initiatives and the weaving of tales of the good ol' days, threading them with the new. In any case, would you like to help?

The streets are open and we need volunteers for the week running up to the Saturday Celebration to help with the gathering and recording of memories from the public, taking and collecting photos, and collectively organising a patchwork of stories! Or perhaps you have an idea of how to recognise community and cultural heritage, to highlight the special district of Norwich 'O'er the Water'.  Either way, jump up and throw-in!  We need you, 'cause memories are for sharing and stories are for telling.

Oh! oh... I hear some of you saying, 'that history stuff is a crashing bore', and, 'besides, I live in the here and now…!'.  Well, for you naysayers of history and stories, how about a little volunteer action in the form of live street performances, hosting a table with small crafts, or, maybe some pavement place poets?  Of course, we wish for everyone to be involved and all are welcome!  So find a place...there's plenty of room, and the Streets are for Celebrating!

Here We Go…To the Streets!

Hello Neighbours!  We are now gaining pace towards The 4th Annual Magdalen-Augustine Streets Celebration.  Many of us are making plans, some of us are gathering stuff, others of us are just sitting on our duffs!  Either way, we are all excited about this, the 4th year of celebrating the culture, the life, the places, and the times of the 'community o'er' the water'.  We welcome everyone to this open street celebration on October 19th.  Of course, now's the time to get involved to make this a hearty celebration.  There will be Vikings! There will be Historic tours! There will be Choirs and Singers! There will be so much more (wink, wink to the community)! So stay blog-tuned to this channel and keep up to date with the preparations and the ongoing developments for this celebration and all accompanying chatter here:  https://www.facebook.com/magdalenstreetcelebration

What's in a name? You decide!

We've decided that Magdalen Augustine Celebration is a bit of a mouthful! Keeping it as a strap line we're looking for YOUR suggestions for a catchy title for our much loved fest on these well trodden streets.

Your name needs to communicate something about the local area, celebrate the culture and diversity unique to this part of town and must be about what the day is all about: community, music, celebration, diversity and independent and exciting local shops!

Listen in to Kate Romer next Monday 24th June on Future Radio between 5-6:30pm for a call out! In the meantime email us with your suggestions. The winner gets their name featured on all of our publicity.

Entries must be in by Friday 28th June 2013. Ready? GO!

We need you!

We need you to make this year's celebration happen!

Are you a performer, musician, good at organising, fancy running a stall or activity? Get in touch by email.

We're currently looking for:
